Hyacinths — Temple of Flora Embroidered Cushion
Inspired by the 1801 botanical plate Hyacinths from Robert John Thornton’s The Temple of Flora, this cushion reinterprets early botanical illustration as a layered textile object. The original aquatint placed five hyacinth varieties within a coastal landscape; this design preserves that sense of cultivated nature, turning the printed sky, shoreline and foliage into a quiet backdrop for raised floral embroidery.
The ground is digitally printed to retain the painterly atmosphere of the historical plate, while selected leaves are refined with flat embroidery and the hyacinth blossoms are built with hand-embroidered dimensional stitches. The result is a decorative cushion with the precision of botanical art and the tactile irregularity of handwork.
